In recent years, one question has been hotly debated online, at watercoolers, in schools and among friends: can leggings be worn as pants? Many say no, citing concerns about coverage and propriety. But many others – specifically, women who enjoy the comfort and ease of leggings – argue the opposite. So we’re wading into the debate. Are leggings appropriate for the workplace?
The answer is: it depends. If you work in a conservative, traditional office environment, leggings will most likely not be accepted as appropriate workwear. On the other hand, casual workplaces might have no problem with leggings. When in doubt, ask a supervisor or a human resources representative.
If you want to wear leggings to work, here are a few simple guidelines to keep in mind:
Do pair a thick ponte’ knit legging with boots or stylish flats. This look is comfortable and acceptable in most casual dress environments. Fashion blogger Franish shows us how to create a professional yet stylish look with leggings, boots and accessories:
Don’t wear thin leggings that become sheer when stretched. Not only could this cause exposure issues, but it’ll likely make you uncomfortable and less productive. Also, assess the fit of your leggings: are they too tight and revealing, or do you have some room?
Do wear a longer shirt, tunic or dress over your leggings. Not only is this a stylish look, but it will provide you with more coverage and comfort.
Don’t wear a short or revealing shirt with leggings. This could create more opportunities for overexposure.
